Not to be racist

I’m talking to a contractor on the phone today and we are talking about a small issue on the job that I need to get resolved. I tell him no problem, we’ll get it fixed and make the homeowners happy.

He then says “Not to be racist, but he’s Puerto Rican and shes German and I’d never do work for people like that again, they were so difficult to work with.”

How can that not be racist? Just because you said you aren’t being racist doesn’t mean you then have the freedom to say anything you want. If you didn’t want to be racist then don’t specifically point out their race…just say you can’t do work for people like that again because they were difficult.

Not to be racist, but I must have been talking to a redneck.
